Historical Context

Introduced in 1855, the royal docks attracted produce and people from all over the world forging London’s position as a global leader.

Due to steam power, trade increased leading to a greater need for wider and deeper docks. Hundreds of thousands of cargoes of grain, tobacco, meat, fruit, vegetables were unloaded onto the quayside and stored in the giant granaries and refrigerated warehouses.
