Listed Buildings and Heritage

With the 2 heritage assets on-site; Millennium Mills and Silo D, the objective was to sympathetically develop around them and turn them into places where people would want to visit.

Silo D has a grade 2 listing and Millennium Mills is locally listed. We plan on putting both these buildings back into usage. The façades will be kept, however internally they will be retrofitted, however, if it is possible to preserve sections of the site, then it should be sought after.

Millennium Mills will be a mixed-use building, having retail and workshops along the lower floors, apartments in the upper floors and a glass extension on the segment furthest east to house a Botanical restaurant. There is a square cut out in along the west-facing edge of the mills, so it might be appropriate to glass it and turn it into an observation area to get a greater view of the docks. Inspiration for the usage of this building has come from the OXO Tower and what CoinStreet Community Builders achieved.

Kept Mill equipment will be dotted around the site to pay homage to the mill's history and the important role it played, these will break up the bog-standard urban features to provide interesting set pieces for people to investigate and interact with.

Decking will be placed in front of the mills to enable people to walk all the way around and for boats to moor. Restaurants can advance on to this section, however, due to the flight path, there should be restrictions in place.

The Mills isn’t going to be dwarfed by any nearby buildings, so it was thought best to let the building breath to make it stand out.

Silo D follows the same logic. We thought its natural setting made it feel quite charming, which an expanded amphitheatre could make a nice performance area. The immediate space in front will be used as a park cafe.
